Wabi Sabi – January 2025 – Building a Sky 2

The key to mixed media is layers, even if you cover most of one layer with the next.

In this mini series, I’m going to share how I use Powertex Products to build up a blue sky.

So my canvas has been drying overnight, and I want to share a couple of photos before covering it with Powertex.

But first, I want to revisit the source photo, as i made a decision on how to proceed. I take most photos in square format on my phone as they make it easier to upload onto here and Insta.

I imagined the canvas based on this photo to be Portrait, but after playing with turning the canvas around, I’ve decided to change the design to landscape.

Someone asked me yesterday why I add a layer of colour and texture if I’m just going to cover it.

Firstly, I don’t know about you, but there is something about making the first which has to be “perfect”. By using a Bister colour wash technique that I can’t “control” allows me to let go of this need for perfection.

Secondly, I find something about a white canvas daunting. This wash technique gets rid of this and adds depth.

Thirdly, it means that the whole canvas is covered (including the sides), and it means I won’t get any accidental white patches.

If you haven’t tried sprinkling salt on wet bister, give it a go. You need to be patient and walk away without touching it,so it can dry naturally.

It’s worth it for the details and texture you create.
