Inspiration – May the Forth be with you

As we celebrate Star Wars, I am going to share one of my favourite projects. Obi Morph Kenobe.

One of the pleasures of living in Bristol is being able to celebrate Aardman Aminations and join in with their occasional Art Trails. Over the last 12 years we’ve looked for Grommits, Wallaces, Shawn the Sheeps and Feathers McGraws, all which raise money for the Bristol Children’s Hospital.

One of the ways that we can continue raise money for the hospital is buying a small blank figurine from the Grommit Unleashed shop, either on line or in person at Cribbs Causeway. My favourite is the Morph, which is great value for money for just under £15. They are perfect for working with Powertex.

During Lockdown, I made one of my favourite Powertex Projects of all times, Obi Morph Kenobi. To get the iconic Morph colour, I painted the sculpture with Terracotta Powertex, and painted the eyes with white and black Powertex.

Morph’s cape and turtle neck are made with bronze Powertex. The overall is made from adding Mocha Powertex Pigment Powder into Ivory Powertex and the rope belt is also coloured with Terracotta Powertex.

The material is a recycled cotton pillow case, I used the corner for the hood of the cape and the seams to get the smart edges of the overall. I the painted his feet with Bronze Powertex to give the effect of wearing boots.

Although we don’t offer Morph’s as a class, it is great little project for you to try at home to play with Powertex and different colours and material effects.

What will you create?
